Sea Pines Plantation of Hilton Head
Island
Sea Pines was the original planned development on the Island, and
became the model for those that followed. The "Grandfather" of Island
Plantations was founded in 1956 by Charles Fraser. For a number of years Sea
Pines and Hilton Head were synonymous.
In fact, the candy striped lighthouse in Harbour Town has come to
symbolize the Island and its sensitive mix of residential and visitor oriented
developments and recreational facilities blended harmoniously into their
natural surroundings.
With more than 5,000 acres Sea Pines is the
largest of the Island's plantations. Almost 1300 of these acres are devoted to
parks, forest preserves, lagoons and marshlands.

alligator-infested fishing lakes and historic Indian sites. Friendly guides

Even-tempered saddlebreds and Western-style saddles make for a comfortable,
hour-long ride. After a quick tutorial, it's off to the trail. Trained horses
follow the leader for a smooth ride regardless of skill level. The pace is kept
at a walk so riders can settle in and comfortably take in the surroundings.
Summer groups swell to around 25 people, while coming off-season means more
personal attention and fewer horses to keep up with.
Harbour Town
1 Lighthouse Rd Hilton Head Island, SC 29928 (843) 363-5655 A
trip to Hilton Head wouldn't be complete without a visit to this quaint marina
village located in Sea Pines. By day, sunburned tourists shop or climb to the
top of the lighthouse for panoramic coastline views. As the sun goes down, the
Quarterdeck fills up with cocktail-slurping folks awaiting the stunning sunset.
At night, crowds mill about and listen to live music from Center Court until a
table opens up at an inevitably crowded restaurant nearby.
With endless
shopping, dining and entertainment options, it's easy to plan a full day in
Harbour Town. From the docks, charter a boat, rent a Waverunner or try an
adventure cruise. Hungry? Eateries range from ice cream shops to upscale
restaurants. Various stores sell everything from postcards and T-shirts to
unique gifts and artwork. Of course, there's always the inviting option of
simply kicking back on a park bench and taking in the scenery from the water's
edge. |
